How To Do SEO of AI Generated Websites

AI is getting smarter daily. Tools that used to need a full development team are now sitting inside a single chat window. A freelancer can spin up a working website in one evening. An agency can ship five client sites in the time it used to take to ship one. And business owners who never touched code are now publishing their own websites by typing prompts into tools like Lovable, Bolt, v0, Cursor, Replit, and similar platforms. This is no longer a side trend. Vibe-coded websites or AI-generated websites are quickly becoming the new normal. In the next 12 to 24 months, I expect a large share of small business websites, landing pages, and even SaaS marketing sites to be built this way. Here is the problem nobody talks about in the demos. These tools are built to make things look good. They are not built to rank on Google. The output is fast, pretty, and broken under the hood from an SEO point of view. If you launch what the AI gives you without checking it, you will get traffic close to zero, no matter how good the design looks. I have audited some of these websites now to see the same issues repeating. Below is the checklist I personally run through every time a client sends me an AI-built site and asks why it is not getting visitors. Why AI Generated Websites Struggle With SEO By Default Most AI website builders prioritize three things: speed of generation, visual polish, and a smooth preview inside their own platform. Search visibility is not on that list. That means the technical foundation is usually weak. Heavy JavaScript, messy URLs, duplicate metadata, default favicons, broken sitemaps, soft 404s, and bloated code are common. None of these issues stops the website from looking good. All of them stop it from ranking. If you are serious about traffic, you have to treat the AI output as a draft, not a finished product. The SEO Checklist For AI Generated Websites 1. Server Side Rendering Most AI builders lean heavily on JavaScript. Google can read JavaScript, but it takes a second pass to do it, and the first pass often sees an empty page. If your homepage loads its real content only after the JS runs in the browser, Googlebot may index it as blank. Check your platform settings and switch to SSR or static generation wherever possible. The goal is simple. When Google fetches the page, the actual content should already be inside the HTML, not waiting to be drawn. 2. Clean Up The URL Structure AI tools love to invent strange URLs. You will see flat structures, random IDs in the path, mixed trailing slashes, and the worst offender, hash-based routing. Group related pages under logical folders, for example /services/seo/ instead of /seo-services-final-v2. Pick one rule for trailing slashes and stick with it across the whole site. Never rely on URLs with a hashtag like /#about. No guarantees, Google will crawl past the hash, so those pages effectively do not exist for search. Lowercase, short, descriptive, no parameters where you can avoid it. That is the standard. 3. Give Every Page A Unique Meta Data Many AI generated sites apply one meta title and description to every page from a root template. Open the source of three different pages and you will often see the exact same tags. Go through every URL and write a unique title and description. Keep titles around 45 to 60 characters and descriptions around 145 to 160. Match the search intent of the page, not just the brand name. 4. Add Canonical Tags Every page should tell Google which URL is the official/main one. The clean way is a self-referencing canonical, where /about points to /about as canonical. 5. Generate A Real Sitemap That Includes Everything AI builders often generate the sitemap once, early in the build, and never update it when you add dynamic pages, blog posts, or database-driven content. The result is a sitemap that misses half the site. Make sure the sitemap pulls all URLs from the actual list of live URLs. Submit it to Google Search Console and check the indexed count against the URL count. If they do not match, dig in and find out why. 6. Make Sure 404 Pages Actually Return 404 This is the silent killer. AI builders create beautiful 404 pages with cute illustrations and a search bar, but the server returns a 200 OK status code in the background. Google sees a successful response and starts indexing dozens of broken URLs as real pages. 7. Cut Redirect Chains During the design phase, AI tools shift URLs around. Each shift adds a redirect, then the redirect itself gets redirected when you change something else. You end up with chains of three, four, or five hops. Crawl the site with a tool like Screaming Frog, Sitebulb or Https Satatus. Anywhere you see a chain, point the original URL directly to the final destination in one hop. Crawl budget is real, even on smaller sites that already struggle to get crawled often. 8. Fix Core Web Vitals After The Design Is Locked AI builders import every library they can think of. Animation libraries, icon packs, three different font families, and full carousel scripts for a page that has no carousel. The Lighthouse score on a fresh AI-built site is usually somewhere between 40 and 70. Once your design is finalized, audit the code. Remove unused JavaScript and CSS. Lazy load images that are below the fold. Compress images and serve them in WebP. Aim for a performance score above 90 on mobile, not just desktop. Extra Points Most People Miss On AI-Built Sites Image Alt Text AI builders almost never write alt text. They generate placeholder strings or leave the attribute empty. Go through every image and write descriptive alt text. This helps with accessibility, image search, and on-page relevance. Internal Linking AI-generated websites usually have a homepage that links to a few service pages, and that is it. Service pages do not link to each other. Blog posts do not link back to services. Build internal links the way a human editor would, with anchor text that actually describes the destination. Schema Markup Most AI builders skip schema entirely. Add Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, FAQ, and Breadcrumb schema where they apply. Validate everything in the Rich Results Test before you push live. Schema is one of the easier wins on these sites because the bar is so low to start. Robots.txt And Indexing Rules Check that the AI builder did not leave a robots.txt blocking the entire site. This happens more often than you would believe, especially on platforms that ship sites with a default Disallow rule on staging. Also check that no important page has a noindex tag. HTTPS, Mixed Content, And Security Headers Confirm the site is fully on HTTPS. Look for any image, script, or stylesheet still being loaded over HTTP. Mixed content warnings hurt trust and can affect indexing on some setups. Open Graph And Social Tags AI builders sometimes forget Open Graph and Twitter card tags. Without them, your shared links on LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and X look bare. Add proper og:title, og:description, og:image, and twitter:card tags to every page. Hreflang If You Target Multiple Regions If your site targets more than one country or language, set up hreflang correctly. AI builders almost always get this wrong, either by skipping it entirely or by pointing every version to the same default. Real Content Written By A Human This is the part nobody wants to hear. You can let AI design the layout. You can let AI scaffold the structure. But the actual words on the page, the part Google ranks, should be written by a human or at least edited deeply by one. Write content that sounds like a person who actually understands the topic. Add real examples, real numbers, and real opinions. That is the part the AI cannot fake convincingly, and it is the part that decides whether you rank or not.
